Public Nuisance - "Gotta Survive"
(Frantic Records)
There's this guy, Joey D. He comes to me in Manic Music, tells me this cd is the wave of the past, the strand of the future, the threshold for which everything is to be judged Ö not in those words but he came into the store and made me stay like an hour after work listening to this band that had been from Sacramento -circa '68, boasted one of the more notorious faces in the music scene, and most of their recorded output never got a proper release cause some people killed Sharon Tate along with the guy who was to release their album. What a story this could be and is.

David Houston is a well-known singer/songwriter around town. He has an open mic night and he does his thing. Some people know him by the work he's done on the Twinkyez recordings. But he's older now. He may not care about these recordings. Most people seem to dismiss their youth cause it was naÔve and contrived and not really anything appropriate. But, in this crazy mixed up world, others see someone's creative product differently. What's on two cds' is amazing. The front cover tells a tale of misunderstood youths, dressed in all black with guns pointing at you. Looking like the Stooges dressed as the Music Machine. My references suck but I'm trying. The actual music is astoundingly fresh for today. Ready to be raped by a whole new culture and youth. This could've easily been on the Nuggets box or some other great comp exhibiting the now sounds from back then. I'm not a huge connoiseur of garage/psych, but I dig this quite a bit. Some of the best garage/psych stuff around. Why? Cause it's messy, honest, catchy, of the times, and there is a fantastic feeling knowing that in time of great discovery, Sacramento was right there with a group of young men that knew how to rock. The songs are fun, exciting and leave you wondering whyÖ Well worth the time to check out. Even if this isn't your thing, the fact they're from the valley gets my peppers cooked. They may not have been the Pretty Things or the Seeds, but they have now found a broader audience than a few freak ass collectors out there, Joey D being one of them. He's got acetates and one of a kind printings of bands that never even existed, he's so on it. But thanks to him I can hear Sacramento music history. Thank you David Houston, even though I'm not into your new solo stuff. I like this artifact. And I know I sound like an idiot even writing about it.
