Coachwhips, The Planet The, Pointlineplane, Sexy Prison Espresso Metro, January 4th 2003
Let me start off by saying that I don't want to like the Coachwhips. First off, they're mining this garage-y rock vein that's so retrovogue nowadays. Secondly, this John Dwyer character...what's up with him? He's just, like, so chic, like, you know? Even the hipsters in San Francisco get all insecure around this guy. Who does he think he is? Does he think he can just show up in a pink mask (Pink and Brown) or in some gay-biker, Village People-sex-slave outfit (Zeigenbock Kopf) or in this case, a silly accountant's outfit and just fucking rock the joint? The answer, of course, is yes. The first time I saw them in Sacramento, they rocked a mini-dance party at Primo's with Dwyer making the requisite appearance on top of the bar. Next, they played the Davis D Street house farewell show and by the end of the night, the bathroom was caked in human blood (not Dwyer's though). So what to do this time? Fuck shit up in the Espresso Metro bathroom, what else??!!?? With most of the crowd packed into the stuffy bathroom, people standing on the stinks and stalls and the drummer using the urinal as his drum stool, Dwyer and company converted me wholeheartedly on this night. Why anybody would want to fuck with the White Stripes with these guys around, I don't know. What else can I say? They're coming again in February and if you're all about the fun in rock, don't miss them.
Sexy Prison is a new band featuring John Pritchard from Corpse Fucks Corpse. Just a two piece with Robert Pickle on bass/sequencer, these guys play this neato, electronic, dancey, moody music. I guess some people might call it electro-clash. I don't know what electro-clash is so I stand by my description. Maybe you could call it IDM (intelligent dance music) without the intelligence because both guys know that it's not the intelligence that makes your ass move. Anyway, I liked them alot. Pritchard sings these heavily-processed vocals over Pickle's live bass while the beat goes on behind both of them. On this night, the vocals were a bit low but it was their second show ever and should only get better.
The Planet The....imagine a kid who really likes prog/math rock but he really, really, really wants to be Prince, except taller. That's kinda like The Planet The. A hybrid of dancy, mathy, earnest rock. It was cool. I preferred the dancier stuff over the mathier stuff but that's just personal preference. They even threw in a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire". I don't know if that was a good thing or not. But overall, definitely an interesting band and not your run-of-the-mill fare.
I'm sorry, I can't say anything about Pointlineplane as I was otherwise preoccupied.
